The setessential
command is used to define a character's mortality. Specifically, it determines whether an NPC (or the player) can be killed during gameplay.
The syntax is as follows:
setessential <base ID> <0 or 1>

: Sets character as mortal.1
: Sets character as immortal (essential).Making an NPC immortal: To designate an NPC as essential (i.e., unkillable), use the base ID of the NPC followed by 1
. When an essential character sustains fatal damage, they enter a 'bleedout' phase, collapsing but not dying.
Making an NPC mortal: Use the base ID of the NPC followed by 0
. This means they can be killed in-game.
The base ID and not the reference ID must be used.
The reference ID is what appears when you click on an object or character with the command console open.
To find the base ID for an NPC use the help
function and find the value that matches the NPC's name under the "NPC_" category in the results.
