Origin

Zeta Ophiuchi is an impressive star located in the constellation Ophiuchus, one of the constellations that straddles the celestial equator. It is a massive blue main-sequence star, approximately 20 times the size of our Sun.

With its high mass, it boasts a luminosity that's several thousand times greater than our own star, even though it's younger with an age of only a few million years. This star's intensity is primarily in the ultraviolet spectrum, which means much of its radiant energy is not visible to the naked eye.

Interestingly, Zeta Ophiuchi is also known for its rapid motion through space, moving at a speed of about 24 kilometers per second relative to its surroundings. This motion creates a bow shock in the interstellar medium, as it pushes aside the thin gas of the intergalactic space, resulting in a phenomenon that can be detected in infrared observations.

The star's rapid pace is believed to be the result of a past event where it was ejected from a binary system after its companion star went supernova.
