Origin

Groombridge 1618 (often simply called Groombridge and designated Gl 451A in the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars) is a star located roughly 15.8 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Ursa Major. It is named after Stephen Groombridge, who catalogued it in the 19th century.

This star is a main-sequence dwarf of spectral type K7 V, which means it's cooler and less luminous than our Sun. Groombridge 1618 is known for its relatively high proper motion, which means it moves noticeably against the background of more distant stars over a period of years.

Though it is one of our Sun's closer neighbors in the vast expanse of our galaxy, Groombridge 1618 has not been confirmed to host any planets. Its relative proximity and the general interest in nearby stars for the search for exoplanets make it a target of interest for astronomers studying stellar and planetary characteristics in our galactic neighborhood.
