Origin

Altair is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila and the twelfth brightest star in the night sky. It's located around 16.7 light-years from Earth.

It is an A-type main-sequence star. It's notable for its extremely rapid rotation; it completes a rotation on its axis in about 9 hours. For comparison, our Sun takes about 25-30 days. This rapid rotation causes Altair to be oblate, meaning it's flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator.

Altair, along with the stars Vega and Deneb, forms the "Summer Triangle" — a prominent asterism in the summer skies of the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, in various cultures, Altair has stories and myths associated with it. One of the most famous is the East Asian tale of the "Cowherd and the Weaver Girl," where Altair (the Cowherd) and Vega (the Weaver Girl) are lovers separated by the Milky Way and are allowed to meet just once a year.

The name "Altair" comes from the Arabic phrase "an-nasr al-ṭā’ir," which means "the flying eagle." This is fitting since Altair is located in the constellation Aquila, which is Latin for "eagle."
