Alpha Centauri Star System

Alpha Centauri Star System

Level 5

Within the Starfield universe, the Alpha Centauri System holds a prominent role as one of the significant planetary systems. It is renowned as the location of the sprawling and extensively explorable human settlement known as New Atlantis City, situated on the planet Jemison. Furthermore, the Alpha Centauri System serves as the central hub for both Constellation and the Vanguard of the United Colonies. Similar to the Sol System, its planets are distinguished by their unique names and encompass a diverse array of moons.

Alpha Centauri is a level 5 star system in Starfield.

All star systems in Starfield have a recommended player level. For Alpha Centauri, this level is 5. It is recommended that your character is at level 5 or higher if you would like to visit any of the planets in the Alpha Centauri system.

Origin

Alpha Centauri is a star system located just over 4.3 light-years away from Earth, making it the closest star system to our Solar System. It is situated in the constellation Centaurus.

The Alpha Centauri system comprises three stars:

  • Alpha Centauri A (Rigil Kentaurus): This is a G-type main-sequence star, similar to our Sun in terms of its spectral type. It's slightly larger and brighter than the Sun.

  • Alpha Centauri B: This is a K-type main-sequence star, a little cooler and less luminous than our Sun.

  • Proxima Centauri: Often just referred to as "Proxima," this is a red dwarf star and is the actual closest star to our Solar System. It lies about 0.21 light-years away from Alpha Centauri A and B.

Planets

Proxima Centauri has gained significant attention due to the discovery of an exoplanet, named Proxima Centauri b, orbiting in its habitable zone. This zone, often called the "Goldilocks zone," is the region around a star where conditions may be just right – not too hot, nor too cold – for liquid water to exist on a planet's surface, a key ingredient for life as we know it.

Observation

From Earth, the Alpha Centauri system is very bright and can be easily observed with the naked eye from locations in the Southern Hemisphere or low latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere.

Significance in Exploration

Given its proximity, the Alpha Centauri system is often discussed as a potential target for interstellar probes and, in science fiction, as a destination for future human space travelers.
